This benchmark measures how cleanly AI engines read an airline, hotel or tour operator's own website, and whether an automated trip planner can take the routes, rooms and rates from it without guessing. In the run measured on 6 August 2026, 83 of the 171 travel and tourism sites approached could not be read at all, and only 88 let the machine in far enough to be scored.

The traveller who once opened ten tabs now asks an assistant to plan the whole trip. The assistant does the legwork it always promised: it goes out to the airlines, hotels and operators, reads whatever routes, rooms, rates and availability it can, and builds the itinerary from what it understood. It is, in effect, an agent knocking on doors on the traveller's behalf, and a brand whose door stays shut is off the itinerary before a single fare is compared.

On 6 August 2026 we ran the leading travel and tourism organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 171 home pages we approached, 83 could not be read by a machine at all: 45 refused an automated reader, 27 gave it no response and 11 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 88 a machine could read, 1 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Hostelworld at 70, with Priceline next at 67. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 88 of the 171 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 1 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 88 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 19 to 70. 1 scored 70 or above, 9 sat between 55 and 69, 45 between 40 and 54, and 33 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 63, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 15, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

Invisible by choice: the 83 locked doors ↓

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

The door that shut on the trip-planner

A closed door in travel is rarely one thing. Of the 83 brands the machine could not read, 45 refused the automated request outright, turning the reader away at the threshold; 27 answered with nothing a machine could use; and 11 kept their rooms and fares locked inside code that only a person's browser ever runs. To a marketing team these look like ordinary, sensible defences against bots. To an AI planner holding a traveller's request they are the same message: come back never.

The brands that did open the door were not thriving inside it either. The middle of the field sits at a Crane Index of 42, and 78 of those measured came in below 55, with scores running from 19 at the floor to 70 at the top. That is the shape of a field where being read at all is the achievement, and being read well is rarer still.

A refusal is a lost booking when the agent is the one buying

For years an unreadable website cost a travel brand a little search visibility and nothing more. A person would find another route to you. The assistant does not. When it cannot read your site it does not pause or try harder; it finishes the itinerary from the brands it could read and moves on. Your flights, your rooms, your tours are never placed in front of the traveller, and the traveller never learns you were an option. The demand did not fall and your price was never the problem. The journey was routed around you before it began.

There is a second, quieter cost. The large online travel agents made machine-readability their business long ago, so an assistant can often see your rooms clearly on the reseller that lists them while your own site tells it nothing. You then pay that reseller a commission to be discovered through a door the machine could open, having lost the direct booking you would have kept. Illegibility in this category can charge you twice. The readable minority the assistant keeps booking

A short list of travel brands has made itself legible, and those are the ones an AI planner returns to. In this run the strongest read belongs to Hostelworld at a Crane Index of 70. Only 1 of the field reached the Strong band of 70, which tells you how much room the leaders still have and how open the top of this table remains to anyone who moves.

The gap the leaders exploit is a specific one. Across those the machine could score, Agent Readiness reads best at a median of 63: once a machine is let in, it can usually navigate a travel site well enough to act on it. What it cannot do is trust what it finds. Brand Representation is the weakest read of all at a median of 15, meaning the typical travel brand never confirms, from its own pages, who it is in terms a machine can attach to one settled identity. An assistant that half-recognises a brand hedges, and a hedged brand is the one left out of the plan.

The remedy is rarely a rebuild. The fastest gains come from setting out the commercial facts a machine reads, your routes, room types, rates and availability, in clean HTML an automated reader can reach rather than sealed inside a booking widget, and from valid structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, that ties your pages to one settled identity.
