This benchmark measures how cleanly AI engines read a UK manufacturer or industrial supplier's own website, and whether they can take its products, standards and approvals off the page correctly. In the run measured on 6 August 2026, 131 of 176 manufacturing and industrial sites returned enough for a machine to score at all.

A procurement lead with a housing to source or a drive to specify no longer begins at a trade directory. She asks an assistant, in plain words, which firms can make the part to the standard, hold the current approval and supply at the volume the contract needs, and the machine answers with a shortlist drawn up before a tender document is written. A maker the engine could not read is not on it. Industrial orders are large and placed slowly, so the cost of that absence is quiet and severe: the firm is left out of a contest it never saw open, and never learns why.

On 6 August 2026 we ran the leading manufacturing and industrial organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 176 home pages we approached, 45 could not be read by a machine at all: 28 refused an automated reader, 12 gave it no response and 5 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 131 a machine could read, not one reached 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Konecranes at 69, with Amcor next at 68. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 131 of the 176 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and not one of them reached 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 131 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 20 to 69. Not one reached 70, 24 sat between 55 and 69, 55 between 40 and 54, and 52 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 65, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 15, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

What the machine has to lift before it can list you

An assistant assembling a supplier shortlist hunts for hard facts: the part number, the material grade, the tolerance, the standard met, the approval held, the throughput a plant can commit to. Across the sites our scanners could read, the median Crane Index score was 42 out of 100, and not one site cleared the Strong band of 70. The engineering is rarely the weakness. The decisive facts simply sit where a machine cannot reach them: sealed inside datasheet PDFs a fetcher does not open, rendered by scripts so the page arrives blank, or held in a distributor portal behind a login. Beyond the scored group, 45 sites could not be read at all, and 5 of them served pages that do not exist until scripts have run: the same wall a buyer's assistant meets and turns away from.

The machine can walk your factory site and still not know who you are

Industrial sites let a machine in more readily than most fields we measure, then leave it unable to confirm whose factory it is standing in. Of the three reads that make up the Crane Index score, the one industrial firms handle best is Agent Readiness, the test of whether an automated agent can reach and act on the site, at a median of 65, and the retrieval read, the one that takes a written specification off the page, comes in at a median of 47. Where the sector falls away is on Brand Representation, the test of whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are, at a median of 15.

For an industrial buyer, that weakest read is the one that decides trust. A machine can reach a manufacturer's website and move through every page and still fail to establish, from that site alone, that the firm is a genuine, accredited maker of the part in question. Reaching your door and vouching for your name are different tests, and the second is the one that puts you in front of a buyer. Where the plumbing works but the credentials do not carry, the machine reaches for a rival whose identity it can verify.

What an inferred approval costs on a live tender

When an engine cannot read a specification, it fills the gap by inference, and an inferred tolerance or an invented approval is more dangerous than silence, because a buyer matching a part to a standard will act on it. 107 of the readable sites scored below 55 by Crane Index, the point at which an engine is already guessing about your capability. Those guesses travel. They reach the next procurement team that asks, unseen by you and impossible to correct, and in a field where one wrong approval disqualifies a supplier outright, a single paraphrase can end a tender before your name is ever discussed. The firms that render their standards cleanly are quoted with the right approvals against their name; the rest are described by software filling in what it could not find. Even the readable field is narrow, running from 20 to 69, so the ground a maker has to cover is small and the reward for covering it first is large.

The shortest route back onto the shortlist

The field is led by Konecranes at 69, with Amcor close behind, and what separates the leaders from the median of 42 is where their facts sit, not what they spend. Publish your datasheets as readable pages beside the downloads. Name the standards and approvals you hold in plain text, not only in a logo strip. Put valid Organization and Product structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, on the pages that carry your specifications, and present one legal identity, worded identically across every division and domain, so a group of many parts resolves to a single maker an engine can trust. This is technical SEO work measured in weeks, not a capital project, and it is the difference between an engine that quotes you accurately and one that guesses.
